Airbus Will Stop Producing Its Famous Double Decker Plane in 2021

Airbus to axe its A380s the world's largest aircraft in 2021

Airbus to axe its A380s the world's largest aircraft in 2021

Airbus will produce 17 more of the planes including 14 for Emirates and 3 for Japanese airline ANA.

Airbus says it will stop manufacturing its iconic A380 superjumbo jet, the world's largest passenger plane. But changing travel patterns and weak demand led to disappointing sales.

As part of the restructuring, Emirates placed a new order for 40 A330-900neo jets and 30 A350-900 aircraft, partially restoring a purchase of A350s which it canceled in 2014. Taxpayers took a risk on the investment, with sums repaid on every aircraft sale alongside... It has a design range of 8,500 nautical mile (15,700 km).Two of the world's longest flights in terms of duration and distance - Dubai to Auckland and Sydney to Dallas/Fort Worth - are now operated by Airbus A380s flown by crews from Fly Emirates and Qantas respectively. Airbus said it had "no substantial A380 backlog and hence no basis to sustain production".

Airlines around the world have been shifting to lighter passenger jets to deal with rising fuel prices. The firm reported a net negative impact of Euro 463 million related to the A380 programme.

Airbus said on Thursday the last A380 would be delivered in 2021.

Measles cases now up to 9

The world's largest airliner, with two decks of spacious cabins and room for 544 people in standard layout, was created to challenge Boeing's legendary 747 but failed to take hold as airlines backed a new generation of smaller, more nimble jets. So how did things reach such a sad ending just six years on?

The A380, which was a major step in Airbus' efforts to compete on equal terms with arch rival Boeing and challenge its legendary cash-cow 747, failed to take hold as airlines started backing smaller, more nimble jets. India, for instance, only lifted the ban on A380s - also prompted by concerns that foreign carriers would further hurt state-run Air India by grabbing a larger share of worldwide traffic - in 2014.

"The A380 is Emirates' flagship and has contributed to the airline's success for more than ten years".

"What we're seeing here is the end of the large, four-engine aircraft", Enders said at Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, France, according to The Guardian.

Enders, the Airbus CEO said: "Today's announcement is painful for us and the A380 communities worldwide". "The consequences of this decision are largely embedded in our 2018 full year results As a result of stopping the production of further A380s, there could be between 3,000 and 3,500 job positions potentially lost at the company, although there will be some room for people to transfer within the company, as it increases further production of its A320 fleet as well as the aforementioned wide-body aircraft". Airbus added that there was a "lack of order backlog with other airlines". Emirates, which had built its global brand around its 100 A380s as well as Boeing 777, said it was disappointed by the closure.
