Apple busts FB for distributing data-sucking research app

Apple Facebook spat is over for now—iOS certificate access restored

While Apple has a program for testing apps called TestFlight, Facebook skipped this by asking participants to sideload the "Research" app on their phones. Their functionality has since been restored, alongside the company's enterprise certs.

In an earlier statement, Facebook had been keen to shut down reports that the company had been accused of "spying" on teenagers through the use of the application in question.

Apple's Enterprise Developer Certificate program gives permission for Facebook to install its apps on iOS devices, and allows for deeper access than usual.

Apple has taken a tough stand on the issue, saying tech companies should protect the privacy of user data, not seek to harvest it and profit from it. Facebook and Google, meanwhile, have built their entire businesses on monetizing their users' activity through advertising.

While Google has its own operating system, Android, a large number of the company's nearly 100,000 employees use iPhones for their work, and the firm releases much of its software on both Android and Apple's iOS. For now, the app appears to be available for Android phones, though not through Google's main app store.

Apple has restored Google's access to its iOS apps, according to Bloomberg's Mark Bergen.

Italy falls into recession as output shrinks
Nearly all of the country's economic indicators are pointing in the wrong direction, and a recession is not being ruled out. The International Monetary Fund last week cut its forecast for eurozone growth in 2019 from 1.9 percent to 1.6 percent.

"Some said they would have to wait weeks to get app updates or changes approved through Apple's App Store". We've been upfront with users about the way we use their data in this app, we have no access to encrypted data in apps and on devices, and users can opt out of the program at any time.

Apple blocking Google's apps is likely to do with its Screenwise Meter app, which tracks how people use their smartphones.

Canahuati did, however, fail to mention that Facebook's research app was strikingly similar to its Onavo VPN app launched a year ago which was found to be tracking users' data and was also pulled from Apple's app store.

Both Facebook and Google have been caught red-handed paying users to have their mobile lives tracked, whether they're aware of the consequences of their actions.

The search and ad giant apologized and said it was a mistake to have operated the app under Apple's enterprise developer program.

Flouting Apple's privacy rules have reportedly resulted in severe consequences for the social media giant. If popular apps, such as Facebook's Instagram and Google Maps, aren't kept up to date on iPhones, consumers might switch to handsets that run on Google's Android operating system.
