In addition to the macOS and iOS updates, Apple also released Shortcuts 2.1.3 to fix vulnerabilities found in Shortcuts for iOS.

Apple has released security updates for iOS and macOS that fix a severe bug in FaceTime that allowed callers to listen in, and potentially view, the people they were calling without the call being answered. News of the bug first hit last Monday, (Jan. 28), and Apple disabled Group FaceTime later that night, to prevent users from being spied upon.

The bug enabled interlopers to turn an iPhone into a live microphone while using Group FaceTime. The primary function of the software update is to address the FaceTime audio bug that allows for easy eavesdropping.

The major security issue in Group FaceTime that was unveiled late last month is now finally fixed with the iOS 12.1.4 update that started rolling out to all supported Apple devices today.

Originally discovered by the 14-year old Grant Thompson although it took quite a while for Apple to respond which has since attracted some attention from the authorities, the company shut down the Group FaceTime feature through a server-side implementation as a temporary measure once the news of the bug started to spread. A FaceTime security update is available for the Mac version of the video messaging app as well.
