Today is World Cancer Day and this year the focus is on prevention by early diagnosis.

In Croatia, there are 170,000 people who had cancer at one point in their lives. Currently, 20% of these patients with symptoms from their cancer present with an emergency complication of their disease, such as haemorrhage.

On average, almost 1,364 patients died of stomach cancer every day, and that is six people every minute.

The remaining 90% of those left over will develop a cancer symptom, such as a seizure resulting from a brain tumour or a lump resulting in breast cancer and will consult their GP. It is better to get tested for any signs since the disease can be treated faster and better when detected through early diagnosis.

"Thousands of lives can be saved in Africa with proper cancer prevention, early detection, access to proper treatment and care", she said.

But despite the positives of spotting cancer early, many factors can stand in the way, from socioeconomic disadvantages to social taboos and even physical barriers.

While seeking new multidisciplinary treatments, we need to learn how to prevent and screen cancer. The government must make policies to build a national cancer prevention and control system and emphasize on individuals' role in cancer prevention.
