Two British skiers feared killed in avalanche in Italian Alps

A New Zealander is among four people found dead after an avalanche near the Italian resort of Courmayeur.

According to Italy's Alpine Rescue Service, eight people were killed as a result of avalanches across the country's ski resorts at the weekend.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson told 1 NEWS, "The New Zealand Embassy in Rome is providing assistance to the family of a New Zealand citizen who has been killed in an avalanche near Courmayeur in Italy".

In all, eight people, including a Belgian snowboarder, died in Italy as a result of weekend avalanches.

The other victims were Katherine Clarke, 39, from New Zealand, who lived in London, and two residents of Chamonix, Nicolas Bruno Vergez, 36, a Frenchman, and Wespazjan Wisla, 38, who was originally from Poland.

At least one was a British national.

Death Toll in Turkey Building Collapse Rises to 3
A team of 86 rescue workers and 26 fire trucks are now on site, according to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. After the collapse, authorities sealed off the area as crowds gathered to watch or help with the rescue operation.

The Valdostano Alpine Rescue aircraft on Monday, searching for two British and two French skiers who were reported missing a day earlier, spotted three bodies.

Friends had raised the alarm when they failed to turn up at an agreed meeting point. They were on the last day of their holiday, the newspaper said.

But search operations were hampered by the continuing risk of avalanches, preventing search teams from going on foot.

Six people were killed in the Val d'Aosta region, on the French border, while one skier was killed in Lombardy and another in the South Tyrol region.

"This is an area which has had a lot of snow and avalanche warnings".
