Baku renewed its contract on Tuesday Feb. 5, 2019, to host Formula One's Azerbaijan Grand Prix through 2023, prolonging the stay of a circuit which initially struggled for acceptance but has since become a fan favorite. It originally signed a ten-year contract with then-CEO Bernie Ecclestone, but last year activated a break clause meaning that the contract would instead expire in 2020 after neat year's race.

"Already, we have played host to some of the sport's most iconic moments", added Rahimov. "This new agreement will allow our race to maximise its commercial revenues through increased fan-engagement activities and a new sponsorship approach".

Baku hosted its inaugural grand prix in 2016, and although the challenging street circuit delivered a tiresome opening offering in terms of F1 track action, the past two editions of the race have been thrillers.

"I would also like to extend my special gratitude to Mr. Carey and everyone at Formula One for proving themselves to be such great friends to our race".

On the eve of last week's summit, the Formula One Promoters' Association, that claimed to represent 16 of the 21 grands prix and of which Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle is chairman, accused the sport's owners of lacking clarity.

However, let's not forget that just weeks after Liberty bought F1 in 2017, Liberty Media's chief executive Greg Maffei pretty much rubbished the event. This year's Azerbaijan GP is scheduled for April 28.

BBC Azeri quoted Maffei as telling a conference in Florida that the Azerbaijan event "does nothing to build the long-term brand and health of the business".

There was no immediate confirmation that Azerbaijani organizers had won the reduction in the race hosting fee which they had previously said they were seeking.

Carey rejected the idea that Formula One, which has a debut race confirmed for Vietnam next year and is still in discussions with Miami, was pursuing new venues at the expense of existing ones.
