The options for Europe are simple - to take Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) fighters "back", or the USA and its subordinate militants in Syria "will be forced to release them".

When CBS News visited the frontline on Thursday, we found SDF fighters on a more relaxed footing since the final offensive began, and apart from sporadic gunfire, a relative calm suggested that the brutal last battle might be coming to an end.

The SDF declared the final push to capture the village a week ago after more than 20,000 civilians, many of them the wives and families of foreign fighters, were evacuated.

"Over the past month, more than one foreign sleeper cell was arrested in multiple areas in Syria", spokesman Bali said.

In December, Trump announced that the USA would be withdrawing its forces from Syria, sparking the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis, with critics claiming the move could leave the U.S.'s Kurdish allies exposed to attack, allow ISIS to regain a foothold in Syria and create a power vacuum.

Eight years into the conflict that has killed more than 360,000 people, President Bashar al-Assad's government controls almost two-thirds of the country. The ISIS detainees are actually held by the SDF and the SDF must decide what to do with them.
