He had been suffering from colon cancer. He later reprised that role in the 1993 follow, Faraway, So Close! "Now we are safe, '" Ganz told the Danish film journal P.O.V. "Or a mother said to her child: 'Look, there's your guardian angel.' They weren't joking".

Among his major highlights, outside of his iconic turns in both Wings of Desire and Downfall, include co-starring with Dennis Hopper in Wenders' American Friend, starring opposite Klaus Kinski in Herzog's Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht, and more recently playing Virgil in Lars von Trier's incredible The House That Jack Built. Though most reviews were favorable, "Downfall" was criticized in some corners for humanizing Hitler.

But Ganz added that he had not gained real insight into Hitler's motivation, saying: "I can not claim to understand Hitler". But what is evil itself?

He said: "There is newsreel of him presenting medals to the Hitler Youth a few days before his death, and you can see his hand shaking, so I visited a hospital and observed Parkinson's sufferers".

Razer Game Store ceases online operations as part of 'realignment plans'
Razer didn't provide an explanation for the shutdown other than to say that it is part of "the company's realignment plans". Rather than act as a direct portal for purchasing games, it instead gave gamers some pretty good deals on games.

Ganz's agent on Saturday announced the news of the actor's demise. Most of these videos were later taken down as a copyright violation.

Beyond films, Ganz performed on the stage in Harold Pinter's "The Homecoming" and Goethe's "Faust".

However, his greatest honour was the Iffland-Ring, a bequest from his predecessor Josef Meinrad in 1996, which is given to the "most significant and most worthy actor of the German-speaking theatre".

From there, Ganz drew the attention of filmmakers on a global scale, like Eric Rohmer ("The Marquise of O"), Francis Ford Coppola ("Youth Without Youth"), Silvio Soldini ("Bread and Tulips"), Stephen Daldry ("The Reader"), and Ridley Scott ("The Counselor"). In one of his more recent appearances, he starred as Sigmund Freud in "The Tobacconist", released past year. In 2010, he received a European Film Award for lifetime achievement.
