Through the first the Leafs carried the run of play and had a slew of high danger chances, especially off the rush. The Capitals won 3-2.

The Washington Capitals are 2-2 on their current road trip and will look to finish it with a victory tonight at the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Washington then went up 2-0 at 12:07 on a sequence that started when Wilson rocked the Leafs Jake Gardiner behind the net. Washington is 83-32 in its last 115 games versus the Atlantic Division. The Leafs went 3-2-1 on their six-game road swing and are hoping to keep pace with the red-hot Boston Bruins, who pulled four points ahead of Toronto with their seventh straight win in Vegas on Wednesday.

Toronto lost to the St. Louis Blues 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday night.

Washington is likely a bit road-weary even with an extra day off heading into this contest, but so is Toronto after coming home following a road trip.

The Capitals held on to win consecutive games for the first time since February 5-7 against Vancouver and Colorado. They were a Holtby and crossbar away from taking an early lead, but while the shot clock suggested dominance, things were much closer by expected goals.

But Sri Lanka eventually stormed to victory without losing even a single wicket. They had assistance from the track as well and made the most of it.

The goal marked Ovechkin's 650th career goal, pulling him within six of tying 13th place Brendan Shanahan, the Leafs president. Ovechkin eclipsed the 40-goal mark in Sunday's loss against the Anaheim Ducks.

Ovechkin is now seven goals away from tallying his eighth 50-goal season in the National Hockey League.

The Capitals struck back on a shorthanded goal by Wilson. Ovechkin's household reputation of scoring is sure to help the Capitals in Thursday's tough matchup, as well as helping the team secure their playoff spot.

So he has 50 goals in his past 73 games. With his first assist in Monday's game, Carlson recorded his 300th career assist, becoming the third defensemen in franchise history to reach that feat. John Carlson and Jakub Vrana assisted on the goal. In the past five games against the Maple Leafs, he has recorded a goal and four assists. Andersen is having a better season than Capitals goalie Braden Holtby and that might be the difference in a game between two high-powered offenses. He had been absent for many games this season, only playing in 45 games out of the 59 game so far, but still has tallied 28 goals and 26 assists.

Andreas Johnsson had the other goal for Toronto (36-20-4).

Brett Connolly also scored for Washington shortly after a Leafs power play expired in the second period. Consisting of Nazem Kadri, John Tavares, Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews and Morgan Rielly.
