Celtics told Pelicans 'everyone can be available' in potential Anthony Davis deal

Or maybe it's simply a matter of the Celtics playing down to their competition all too often this season, as Boston still has shown an ability to flip a switch against better opponents.

The New Orleans Pelicans are nearly certain to ask for Jayson Tatum as part of any potential trade package for Anthony Davis when they engage in talks with the Boston Celtics, and that is apparently not an unrealistic request. Around NBA's February 7th trade deadline, Boston made their intentions clear to the New Orleans Pelicans surrounding their pursuit of All-Star Anthony Davis after the season.

In the days leading to the 2019 trade deadline, Anthony Davis requested a trade from the team that he had been with since 2012.

Boston is not eligible to acquire Davis or any other "Rose Rule" player until this summer, when fellow "Rose Rule" player Kyrie Irving's current contract expires. Of course, the asking price for a player of that caliber is going to be insanely high, but the Celtics seem prepared to push many of their chips to the center of the table.

The Celtics took LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to seven games in the Eastern Conference finals last season without Irving and Gordon Hayward, but the club simply hasn't jelled for much of this season, even creating questions as to whether Irving's presence is stunting the growth of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and/or Terry Rozier.

"I'll play basketball anywhere", Tatum said. He said that he will play for whoever wants him since it was his job and the trading talks are already out of his control.
