Chinese probe measured night-time temperature on the moon

The moon's far side is also known as the dark side because it faces away from Earth and remains comparatively unknown.

Chang'e 4's landing on the far side of the moon is clearly a source of pride for China, as the nation has accomplished something no other country has done. It's the first detection data of lunar night temperature obtained by China's lunar exploration project.

Having successfully landed on the far side of the moon earlier this month, the Chang'e-4 lunar lander-named after a Chinese moon goddess-woke from a two week long period of hibernation and discovered nighttime temperatures on the far side of the moon are much colder than scientists were originally anticipating.

The Chang'e-4 probe recorded lunar night temperatures that reached minus 310 degrees, Xinhua reported.

When the un-crewed Chang'e 4 probe performed the world's first soft landing on the far side of the moon, China achieved a major milestone in space exploration.

China's Chang'e-4 probe, launched on December 8, landed on the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the Moon on January 3.

The temperature was lower than conditions reported by USA missions to the near side of the moon, according to Chang'e-4 mission director Zhang He, speaking with China's state-owned news agency Xinhua. "We still need more careful analysis", Zhang added. Previously, Chinese scientists had no data on exactly how cold it could be.

Videos from the incident show the quick creature darting into an enclosure and pouncing on one man as a frenzied crowd runs away. It was also seen leaping across walls and pushed one man off a ladder as he tried to spread out a net to catch the animal .

The two devices had successfully completed their mission during the first lunar day (approximately 28 earth days), including sending the first photo of the moon's far side.

Temperatures vary enormously between day and night on the moon.

"It was a success, but Chang'e-3 was designed according to foreign temperature data", said Zhang. When lunar night fell, temperatures plummeted as low as -170°C and the plant's short life came to an end. These include the first "low frequency radio astronomy experiment", an investigation into whether plants can grow in a low gravity environment and if interaction between solar winters and the lunar surface exists.

The Chang'e-4 spacecraft will carry out a range of science experiments and continue to return images from the topography camera on the lander and a panoramic camera on Yutu-2.

NASA's Curiosity rover also adopts this power technology, freeing it from the sunshine, sand and dust restrictions that have affected its predecessors Opportunity and Spirit, he explained.

China's Chang'e 4 lander and rover are in good shape following a cold spell on the moon.
