Delhi: Massive fire breaks out in hotel, 9 die

The death toll rose to 17 from a fire that tore through a hotel in New Delhi on Tuesday, a senior official said. "Fire has been doused".

A call was received at 4.30 a.m. from Arpit Palace Hotel and immediately 25 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, the officer at the Delhi Fire Department headquarters told IANS. Bodies are being taken out now.

At least 35 others were rescued from the five-storey building.

Among the 17 dead was one child, fire officials reported. All the 13 taken to RLM hospital have died, of the 5 admitted to Lady Hardinge Hospital, 2 have succumbed to their injuries. Many were severely injured and have been rushed to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Balan Mani, Delhi Hotel Association Vice President said, "It was due to fire in ducting because of which it had spread to the hotel rooms". In 1986, a major fire broke out in Siddharth Hotel in Vasant Vihar. The blaze had killed 37 and injured 39 people. Later, it was renamed as the Vasant Continental. Several foreigners were also killed in the blaze.

Delhi authorities often launch raids to enforce building codes, fire safety measures and evacuation procedures.

Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain, who visited the hotel where the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning, said the government has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident to see if there were lapses on part of the management.

"When the fire tenders reached the spot, flames were leaping out of the building". The fire had broken out in the dispensary of the state-run Medical College and Hospital on October 3 previous year. "Many people were still fast asleep at that time", he said.
