Derje disrupts Thiem music at Rio

Argentina's Diego Schwartzman, who is the fourth seed and defending champion, had his match suspended by rain.

Another upset saw third seed Marco Cecchinato fall victim to Slovenian tennis star Aljaz Bedene going down 5-7, 6-7 (1-6).

Austria's Thiem, the No. 1 seed, lost to Serbia's Laslo Dere 6-3, 6-3 while second seed Fabio Fognini of Italy fell to Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime 6-2, 6-3. He arrived in Brazil as the big favourite, together with Austrian Dominic Thiem (8th ranked) after winning the ATP 250 titles of Sao Paulo, Bastad and Los Cabos in 2018.

It will be the first such space capsule to land on the moon on a private initiative rather than on a government-funded enterprise. That worldwide competition offered $30 million to whichever privately funded team could land a robotic spacecraft on the moon.

World No. 104 Auger Aliassime became the biggest surprise of the tournament by eliminating Fognini, who is the only player to have featured in all six editions of the Rio Open. He played a bit worse than normal I think, to be honest. "I felt the ball really well, hitting well from the baseline and then attacking well when it was time for that", ATP quoted Djere, as saying.Djere will next face either Brazil's Thiago Seyboth Wild or Japan's Taro Daniel.

The seventh-seeded Malek Jaziri went down to Federico Delbonis 6-3 7-5, while Nicolas Jarry lost to Roberto Carballes Baena 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (8-6) in a three-hour marathon at the clay-court event. Sousa was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Guido Pella of Argentina and Lajovic succumbed to Briton Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-1.
