Djokovic fought off tough competition from the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Eliud Kipchoge and LeBron James to win the Laureus "World Sportsman of the Year Award" on Monday night.

The comeback of the year award was handed to US golfer Tiger Woods, who silenced even his harshest critics when he earned what some consider to be one of the greatest victories of his career at last year's Tour Championship season finale.

The world No.1 said he had to overcome plenty of mental battles to return to the top of the tennis world. Japan's first Grand Slam tennis star Naomi Osaka received the "Breakthrough of the Year Award" for her victory in the US Open, where she defeated five-time Laureus Award victor Serena Williams.

Japan's Osaka won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open previous year, then won the Australian Open last month.

The night's biggest and most emotional honor was presented to Vonn, who ended her skiing career on February 10 with a bronze medal at the world championships in her final downhill race.

At the time, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions said McCabe was terminated for "lacking candor under oath" with the Inspector General.

Having ended a two-year wait for a grand slam win at SW19, Djokovic believes he had to attempt to find satisfaction from within.

The 15-time Grand Slam champion from Serbia, Novak Djokovic was declared the 2019 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year in Salle des Etoiles, Monaco.

"Being part of the French football team offers one the rare privilege of bringing happiness to the French people", said Deschamps, who won the same award with his Euro 2000 winning team-mates in 2001.

"Thank you all so much, I'm going to miss it".

Last year, she had won her sixth Paralympic gold at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Regarded as the greatest women's skier of all times not because of her four World Cup titles and three Olympic medals but for the sheer tenacity to comeback after a slew of career-threatening injuries, Vonn broke down on stage while receiving the Laureus Spirit of the Sport award.
