Long Island Rail Road train slams into car 'trying to beat the gate,' 3 killed, officials say

Three people were killed and service was suspended along several Long Island Rail Road lines Tuesday night after officials said a two trains struck a truck on the tracks, CBS New York reports.

LIRR President Phillip Eng agreed with Brown and said he's looking into how to make it happen. We've confirmed that they were functioning, " he said. "Costs that should be borne by others are being borne by us now".

Three people were killed in NY on Tuesday night when a Manhattan-bound train struck a vehicle that was on the tracks, officials said.

The three dead were in the vehicle, Eng said, and the injured included seven train passengers, a conductor, and an engineer. In the others, a person walking or standing on the tracks was hit by a train.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement posted on Twitter that he is calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, State Police, local law enforcement and the National Transportation Safety Board to conduct a full investigation into the collision.

Service was suspended in both directions on the Ronkonkoma and Huntington/Port Jefferson branches.

"The witness said that individual was involved in an accident and went around the gate", Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said. LIRR crews have been working around the clock to re-rail the two rail cars, LIRR officials said in a press release.

A westbound train traveling toward Westbury then struck the vehicle, he said.

The incident occurred during rush hour when two LIRR trains traveling in opposite directions crashed into a vehicle that had driven around lowered gates and onto the tracks. "We advise customers to take alternate branches, including the Babylon, Montauk or Hempstead branches", the LIRR tweeted.

Local branches of the Red Cross have also mobilized and are helping the passengers on the damaged trains. One end of one the trains struck a station platform, crushing part of it.
