Eero had grand smart home aspirations. Now Amazon owns them all

Amazon agrees to buy Eero, maker of home Wi-Fi hardware

Mesh Wi-Fi networks are essential if you want good wireless coverage in a larger home/apartment, and while the market for these routers is huge, Eero has managed to stick out as one of the best options out there. The merger is expected to be completed by the first half of 2019.

With flexible configurations for different sizes and shapes of home, the company's goal is to eliminate dead spots.

"We are incredibly impressed with the eero team and how quickly they invented a WiFi solution that makes connected devices just work", said Dave Limp, SVP of Amazon Devices and Services.

A key reason for the Eero acquisition is Amazon's increased focus on the internet connected home.

Amazon has made some major smart home deals in the recent past. The e-commerce giant acquired smart doorbell company Ring a year ago for $1 billion, and has struck alliances with consumer electronics companies to bring its Alexa smart assistant to a wide range of kitchen appliances and other devices.

Google, Amazon's main rival in smart home, already sells a competing - and much cheaper - system called Google Wifi. In April past year, the e-commerce giant purchased Ring, a maker of video doorbells and other security equipment, for $839 million. Customers can customize an eero system to meet the needs of their home-regardless of shape or size-eliminating dead zones, ensuring flawless streaming video in every room, and delivering the bandwidth all connected devices need. Smart home systems are notoriously complex to set up, and the interplay of devices can put a lot of strain on home WiFi systems.

There's also a potential tie-in to another growing Amazon service. It already makes Echo smart speakers - which dominate the U.S. market - as well as Fire TV streamers and even an Alexa connected microwave.
