Elizabeth Warren Backs Slavery Reparations

She later told the Times that America has to "be honest that people in this country to not start from the same place or have access to the same opportunities".

From the very first day of the 2020 presidential race, when Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA blamed "generations of discrimination" for black families earning far less than white households, Democratic hopefuls have broadly emphasized racial justice and closing the wealth gap in their policy platforms. "I'm serious about taking an approach that would change policies and structures and make real investments in black communities".

"Black families have had a much steeper hill to climb - and we need systemic, structural changes to address that", she said in the statement.

The "In Da Club" hitmaker did however have advice for his Democratic hopeful co-guest on how to connect with young voters ahead of her presidential run. Like other Democratic initiatives such as Medicare for All, reparations would likely cost trillions of dollars.

Scholars estimate that black families earn just over $57 for every $100 earned by white families, according to the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey.

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris also recently said she would support some form of reparations.

At the time, Hillary Clinton's campaign attacked Sanders over the issue, although Clinton herself had not directly expressed support for reparations, either. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who dismissed the idea in 2016.

The rapper was asked by "Late Late" host James Corden - while unusually juxtaposed with Senator Elizabeth Warren on the couch - if a politician had ever tried to get his support or court him in the past.
