European Union top official Donald Tusk calls on Theresa May to delay Brexit

British PM Theresa May makes last-ditch effort to win Brexit concessions from E.U.

While EU Council President Donald Tusk said Monday that it would be "rational" for the March 29 Brexit date to be extended, British Prime Minister Theresa May reiterated her opposition to any delay.

When the British Parliament voted 432-202 against her deal in January, one of the worst defeats in modern British history, the embattled prime minister said she would seek changes to the agreement and give lawmakers a final say, while also avoiding a no-deal that cabinet members say would be "disastrous".

"As a last resort, if the only alternative to no deal is some form of short delay to Brexit, then delay we should", Evans said.

If she fails, May will have to decide whether to delay Brexit or endanger the world's fifth largest economy by leaving without a deal on March 29.

Three cabinet ministers, Amber Rudd, David Gauke and Greg Clark, threw down the gauntlet to May at the weekend as they urged her to remove the possibility of a no-deal Brexit.

Senior figures in the opposition Labour Party said on Sunday it was moving closer to supporting another Brexit referendum and could do so as soon as early as this week.

Backers of the Cooper-Letwin amendment said it was still crucial to make sure a no-deal Brexit is ruled out this week. May's hands are increasingly tied by an unpopular divorce deal she sealed with the European Union but that Parliament has rejected by a landslide.

However, May herself seems to be skeptical about the usefulness of such an option, which would amount to the extension of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which now gives London two years to leave the bloc since the start of the negotiation process. But several ministers indicated on Friday they were ready to vote against her to prevent a cliff-edge departure - joining with Labour members of Parliament to do so.

"Beyond the next few days, there simply will not be time to agree a deal and complete all the necessary legislation before March 29", they wrote. "We are getting closer to that point".

We look at errors, things we can do well. "With England losing, Wales are looking like a tough proposition, but all we can do is concentrate on our own game and produce to the best of our ability".

As the Brexit crisis goes down to the wire, May said a so-called "meaningful vote" would not take place this week as expected.

On Monday, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said that Ireland would not veto a British request to extend the Brexit timetable for 21 months but it would prefer to see problems with the current deal resolved.

"Theresa May is recklessly running down the clock in a desperate attempt to force MPs to choose between her deal and no-deal".

The European council president revealed that he and the prime minister had walked through the legal process that would need to be followed to delay Brexit.

The EU has said it will not reopen the text, but is looking at what "guarantees" could be given to reassure MPs that the backstop would be temporary.

Opponents accuse her of deliberately running out the clock, so as to force parliament to choose between a deal it has already rejected or leaving the European Union with no deal at all, which businesses say would destroy their supply chains.

"I think what's important that we are still in that process of working with the European Union, looking at the ways in which we can resolve the challenge that parliament raised".

The Dutch prime minister, Mark Rutte, who also met May for talks in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, said he feared that the United Kingdom was "sleepwalking" to a no-deal Brexit.
