A jury has ruled that Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) franchisee must pay over $1.5 million to a former DE employee who claimed being harassed and demoted after wanted to pump her breast milk.

Ms Lampkins was awarded more than $35,000 in compensatory damages as well as $2.1 million in punitive damages.

She sued for gender discrimination and harassment experienced at two of the Delaware KFC restaurants she worked at.

"It was a great and long-fought victory", Lampkins' attorney, Patrick Gallagher of Wilmington law firm Jacobs & Crumplar P.A., told the news outlet. "It's a great day for women's rights. The jury sent a message that employers can not treat lactating women differently in the workplace".

Once her training was complete, Lampkins was transferred to a different KFC location and demoted by her new supervisor, Emily Martin, who "explicitly told Ms. Lampkins that her demotion to shift supervisor was because she was pumping breast milk while at work", the lawsuit stated.

Autumn Lampkins said her breastmilk supply dried up because she wasn't allowed to pump enough.

The former employee also claimed that when she was able to pump milk during her shifts, there was no privacy because of the surveillance cameras and windows in the restaurant, the publication reported.

At first, she pumped in a single-stall bathroom before being ordered to pump in a manager's office monitored by a camera she was told could not be switched off. Lampkins said her new co-workers started getting jealous and complaining about the "breaks" she was allowed to take to pump.

Lampkins said she started to take fewer breaks, which then led to physical pain.

At the time of her employment, Lampkins claimed being assured that breastfeeding wouldn't be a problem at work.

"He didn't apologize. He didn't acknowledge he was wrong".
