Facebook's new location controls on Android will let users disable background collection

Android users can now disable background location sharing with Facebook

Up until now, background collection was bundled into the broader location history setting. That's because unlike iOS, Android does not have a built-in location tracking feature that allows you to limit apps to having access to your location only when you are using an app. Google is expected to introduce a similar feature on Android with this year's Android Q release, but that's probably going to take ages to arrive for most Android users. People using the Facebook app on Android could either totally share their location data or disable info sharing entirely.

Facebook has been criticized before for the data it collects from Android phones.

While the overall news about Facebook has been somewhat grim recently, focusing mostly on privacy failures and generally creepy tracking practices, this time around we have to give Facebook credit for adding a new setting to its Android app that is actually a great thing for users.

Major Airlines To Offer Non-Binary Options For Passengers
USA airlines will add more gender options for passengers who don't identify as "male" or "female", the media reported on Tuesday. The news of these new airline options for passengers comes about two years after similar advancements in drivers licenses.

The company says that with the update, it's not collecting any new information or changing the choices a user previously made. Android users can now disable background location information sharing with Facebook. For example, when people choose to use Nearby Friends, a feature that lets friends share their locations with each other, they give Facebook permission to access their location even when they're not using the app. With this update, you'll have a dedicated way to choose whether or not to share your location when you aren't using the app. So, if you had previously opted out of Facebook keeping your Location History, the new background location tracking option will default to off, but if you had Location History on, this new setting will also be on by default.

Location information makes it possible for people to use Facebook to plan events, see more relevant ads, mark themselves safe in a crisis and share their favorite places.
