Yellow Vests Protester Gets Hand Blown off by Grenade in Paris

Volunteer medics at the National Assembly said that a man had had his hand ripped off during the clashes between police and protesters.

On Saturday, 9 February, hundreds of Yellow Vests protesters took to the streets of Paris in the 13th week of protests to sweep across France.

Police fired tear gas in Paris to disperse demonstrators, some of whom threw debris at riot police hunkered down in front of the National Assembly.

Saturday's protest in the French capital was one of the most violent and gruesome since the movement began back in November 2018.

The first yellow vest day of protest in November brought 282,000 people out on to the streets across France, according to government figures. Police confirmed that a protester had a hand injury, but provided no further details other than to say treatment was being provided. Cars, motorbikes, and trash bins were set ablaze as the protest moved toward the city's Invalides monument and onto the Eiffel Tower.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner went to Twitter to express his "disgust" as protesters set alight an anti-terror military auto.

One witness who filmed the incident, 21-year-old Cyprien Royer, said the victim was a yellow jacket photographer taking pictures of people trying to break down the barriers protecting the entrance to the National Assembly. France's interior Christophe Castaner tweeted his indignation over the vehicle being set on fire saying,"These attacks are intolerable".

Police said 31 demonstrators had been arrested in the unrest.

Now, in their 13th consecutive week, the protests have become a sort of an uprising against the French President, Emmanuel Macron, who is seen as out of touch with common people.

The Interior Ministry put the total number of protesters around France at 12,000, including 4,000 in Paris.

The activists waved Latvia's red-and-white flag, shouting slogans like "the French have woken up, while Latvians remain asleep".
