Google-branded smartwatches and other wearables could soon become a reality

As Android Police first reported, Google this week posted a job listing on its Careers site seeking a "Vice President of Hardware Engineering for Wearables", fueling speculation that it's building a Pixel smartwatch.

The postings are quite clear in regards to the importance of Google's wearable projects as they directly state the two future hires in question are meant to be on close working terms with the hardware unit's senior leadership as they come up with ways to create new and improve existing products.

Google announced it was buying technology from Fossil last month for $40 million. The company now sells Pixel Buds (if by sell you mean "has available for sale"), but they're far from a raging success.

Pep Guardiola Swears After Learning of Benjamin Mendy's 'Hong Kong' Trip
Pep Guardiola wasn't best pleased when he found out Benjamin Mendy was in Hong Kong, and the Frenchman has hilariously responded. Guardiola said this was because De Bruyne is still being eased back following injury: "It's quite possible [he might not start]".

When Google started doing its own hardware, a lot of us not too secretly hoped that we'd see some Google-branded wearables. Google has been steadily adding to the Pixel brand in recent years, but has yet to release the rumored Pixel-branded timepiece.

It's been around four years since Google launched Wear OS, formerly called Android Wear, but we still don't have any wearable such as a smartwatch or fitness tracker from Google itself yet. At one point Wear OS shipped on smartwatches from Samsung, LG, Sony, Huawei, Motorola, Fossil, and Asus, but most major OEMs have given up on Google's wearable OS. A big part of the problem is that there is just nothing to make a smartwatch with. The hardware ecosystem has been strangled by Qualcomm, which refuses to make a modern smartwatch chip that can compete with Apple or Samsung's in-house chip divisions.

Google does not sell its own smartwatch, but reports past year hinted that the company could announce its own Pixel-branded smartwatch at the Google Pixel 3 launch event, which obviously did not happen. Maybe this job listing news, though, shows there's a chance for Google to take a big, much-needed step forward here.
