Trump-pick Heather Nauert ends bid to be next US ambassador to UN

President Donald Trump will make an announcement on the issue "soon", the statement said.

A person familiar with the matter said Ms. Nauert withdrew from consideration because she had a nanny who was in the US legally but did not have the proper work visa.

Nauert's statement on her decision concerning the United Nations post made no mention of the nanny issue.

Haley has held the United Nations post since the beginning of Trump's administration and said she would stay in the job through the end of the year. "And I think she's going to be respected by all".

Ms Nauert, who did not have a good relationship with Mr Tillerson and had considered leaving the department under his tenure, was appointed acting undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs after his departure.

She had not yet officially been nominated for the post, and her potential confirmation by the Senate had not been assured.

President Donald Trump, an avid viewer of conservative-leaning Fox News where Nauert was once an anchor on morning show "Fox and Friends", told reporters in December that he wanted her to be United Nations ambassador.

With Trump's Republican Party in control of the Senate, her nomination had not seemed to be in serious risk, barring any disclosure that had not been made public. "They should meet ISIS", she wrote sarcastically.

During Nauert's twice-weekly briefings at the State Department and her own trips, she has shown a passion for human rights issues.

The sheriff said her team is still investigating the scene and speaking with people who called 911 to report the bodies. Four people were shot to death in central MI in what investigators say may have been a murder-suicide.

That would not have served her well during the confirmation process. Ayotte has since won high marks from the White House for helping to shepherd the nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

The president was already discussing a possible replacement for Nauert with advisers Saturday evening, a source told Bloomberg.

The withdrawal is related to employment of a nanny who was in the country illegally, three people familiar with the matter said.

The plan was to degrade the position to one that fell under the secretary of state - meaning not being in cabinet-level meetings.

While announcing his decision in December 2018, Trump praised Nauert for her work with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

There were concerns that Nauert would be face a hard confirmation process, several sources familiar with the matter had told CNN. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

CNN's KFile reported last week that Nauert once hosted a panel on unfounded conspiracy theories that Islamic fundamentalists are secretly trying to destroy America by imposing Sharia law.

Former Fox News personality Heather Nauert is withdrawing her bid to be United Nations ambassador, CNN reported Saturday. She once stunned the White House press room by turning the anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy during the WWII into a pretext to celebrate the US' "long history" with Germany.
