Hill's Pet Nutrition has recalled select Science Diet and Prescription Diet canned dog food for possible elevated levels of vitamin D. Symptoms include vomiting, weakness, loss of appetite, increased thirst & urination, seizures, abdominal pain, and sudden weight loss.

The affected dog food was distributed to pet stores and veterinary clinics nationwide.

Owners whose dogs have eaten the canned food and are showing any symptoms should contact their veterinarian, the FDA said.

Pet owners should not feed the recalled food to their dogs and retailers shouldn't sell the foods, the FDA advises. The company said, in most cases, pets will fully recover after they are no longer fed the recalled food.

The company discovered the potential for elevated vitamin D levels in some of their canned dog foods after receiving a complaint in the United States about a dog exhibiting signs of elevated vitamin D levels.

Here's where you can locate the lot code and date on the cans.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, but excessive amounts of it could lead to serious health issues including renal dysfunction.

The recall is only for canned dog food, primarily in the United States, Hills noted.
