He also outlined some of the obstacles and limitations that hinder women and girls in taking up more prominent role in science and research.

Although this celebratory day was yesterday, it's important to keep the conversation alive throughout the year and to honor the inventive, creative, and talented perspective that women bring to the industry.

"I've never doubted the potential of women in science, but we've been losing that potential inside a leaking pipeline, where the higher the academic level, the fewer women we find", says Daisy Hessenberger, a 29-year-old Austrian geneticist and passionate member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

At present, less than 30 percent of researchers worldwide are women, according to data from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Globally, female students' enrolment is particularly low in Information Communication Technology, which is about three per cent, natural science, mathematics and statistics (five per cent) and in engineering, manufacturing and construction (eight per cent).

In line with the goals of Homeward Bound, which already includes scientists from some thirty nationalities, including Spanish and Latin American, the United Nations is promoting this year's campaign "Investment in Women and Girls in Science for Inclusive Green Growth".

On the occasion of International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Monday, a United Nations data revealed that despite 15 years of international effortto promote women in science, they continue to face barriers, Efe news said. In 2015 and 2016 SSSRI initiated the agenda to improve STEM education in the country.

"To overcome this inequality, our updated National Science and Technology Policy ensures application of science, technology and innovation (ST&I) for achieving sustainable economic growth with due attention to employment generation, gender equity and environmental sustainability'".

He noted that government's move showed that STEM education had been recognised as a key driver of opportunity to equip learners with knowledge, hands-on skills and disposition to effect changes in the society. Over the past 15 years, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. "We need to talk in a very popular type of way about our work that will go a long way in promoting science careers among our young girls".
