Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif seen here during a press conference in Tehran earlier this month has announced his resignation on Instagram

Zarif had been a major proponent of the Iran Nuclear Deal back in 2015, arguing for the removal of sanctions and a nuclear enrichment plan with the then Secretary of State, John Kerry. But Deputy Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sayyed Abbas Moussawi confirmed the authenticity of the message to the official Islamic Republic News Agency. That has fueled speculation that Zarif quit after losing influence. Entekhab news site quoted Zarif as saying he had "no credibility in the world" after he was left out of a meeting with Assad that was heavily publicized, and thereby missing from official photographs.

A spokesman for the Iranian mission to the United Nations, Alireza Miryousefi, confirmed that Zarif had submitted his resignation, the news agency said.

Ahmadinejad wanted him replaced, but Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei intervened to keep him in the position for another two years as Iran soon found itself an worldwide pariah over its nuclear program.

The larger context of Zarif's resignation may signal several potential scenarios, including dissatisfaction with Iran's regional policies.

Some hard-liners even threatened Zarif with bodily harm after the nuclear deal was signed.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif suddenly resigned late Monday night without warning, offering an "apology" to the nation as the nuclear deal he negotiated with world powers stands on the verge of collapse due to the us withdrawal from the accord.

Rangers trading Kevin Hayes to Jets as fire sale continues
The Jets are now first in the Central Division with 78 points and third in the Western Conference behind Calgary and San Jose. The 32-year-old defenseman had managed two goals and three assists in 36 games played so far this season.

But he has come under attack by anti-Western hardliners in Iran after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would be leaving the agreement last May.

In this vein, the Europeans recently launched their so-called Special Purpose Vehicle after many months of delay.

However the USA has threatened sanctions on European companies doing business with Iran, putting the future of the deal in doubt.

Rouhani's chief of staff, Mahmoud Vaezi, said on Twitter that he "strongly rejected" reports that the president had accepted Zarif's resignation.

Experts on Iran speculated the move could be rejected by Rouhani as signal of trust in the diplomat, which could also be interpreted as a demonstration of power aimed at his hard-line critics. Nonetheless, it is not clear if Zarif is prepared to stay on.

"It seems. Zarif submitted his resignation letter and went on social media before either Rouhani and Khamenei [can] react to this resignation, which might mean that Zarif is locked in a fight with hardliners on what directions should the Iranian foreign policy take amidst growing United States pressure on its economy", Macaron told MEE via email.
