Jussie Smollett Made His First Public Appearance Since His Alleged Attack

Jussie Smollett already had a show scheduled at the Troubadour in the West Hollywood area of Los Angeles before he was attacked on January 29 in a racist and homophobic hate crime. He identifies as gay and plays a gay character on the series. Smollett said his attackers used the n-word and "f*gg*t", placed a noose around his neck, and poured bleach on him. He added he wasn't hospitalized though he did go to the doctor, and that medical examiners cleared him to perform. "I couldn't let those mother f-kers win".

"I'm not fully healed yet, but I'm going to, and I'm going to stand strong with you all", he told the crowd as fans cheered. The song includes lyrics such as "Daddy raised a soldier, whether he knew it or not" and "I refuse to let my people down". "And after much debating, some arguing, many tears, my family and I realized that tonight is an important part of Jussie's healing". And above all: "I fought the fuck back". "But guess what, it stops with the people that believe in love".

Fans waited in the rain to listen to the Empire star, who opened his set by explaining why he made a decision to play after the January 29 incident that generated widespread attention for the gay actor-singer. "This song has new meaning to me", he said of the latter tune.

But Smollett said he couldn't do that.

Fan Monique Davis said after the show that she was shocked he spoke so bluntly and directly about the incident, but she's glad he did. "Look at all the people coming out. Now is the time: Be blacker, be gayer, do it right the fuck now".

Smollett clarified some details about the attack.

Authorities so far have not been able to find video of the attack, despite a sophisticated system of surveillance cameras around the city.

"Most importantly, during times of trauma, grief and pain, there is still a responsibility to lead with love".

"I have so many words on my heart", the actor/singer said, addressing the 400-capacity club after embracing members of his family. "Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served".

Smollett's family issued a statement Thursday supporting the actor and condemning the attack, calling it a "racial and homophobic hate crime".

"Jussie has told the police everything from the very beginning", the statement read. I will never stand for anything other than that.

"I'll sign them I promise!" said Smollett, who was dressed in a simple white shirt and black trousers. Police say Smollet is being treated as a victim and they have no interest or probable cause to obtain his call records through a search warrant.

He addressed the attack again directly only toward the end of his hour-slong set.
