PM Trudeau admits Jody Wilson Raybould asked if he was directing her in SNC-Lavalin scandal

February 7 - Citing unnamed sources, the Globe and Mail newspaper reports that Trudeau's aides "attempted to press Jody Wilson-Raybould when she was justice minister to intervene in the corruption and fraud prosecution of Montreal engineering and construction giant SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.", and that exasperation with her lack of co-operation was one reason for shuffling her out of the justice portfolio.

In a statement, Butts "categorically" denied accusations that he personally applied undue pressure on former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould for an out-of-court settlement with the firm.

First, let's assume he told the truth when he said no one in his office inappropriately pressured former attorney-general Jody Wilson-Raybould to drop the criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin on charges of bribery of the Libyan government, in favour of a non-criminal Deferred Prosecution Agreement.

Butts didn't specify where he was going after his resignation.

February 13 - The House of Commons justice committee debates its own probe of the issue.

He added that the allegation was distracting from the "vital work" Trudeau was doing and that it was in the best interest of the Prime Minister's Office for him to step aside.

"Where I think the government fell short is that as soon as Wilson-Raybould resigned they should have offered the very sound economic and business rationale for using remediation in the SNC-Lavalin case", Wiseman said.

This Week in Westminster: more deadlock as Government faces another Brexit defeat
Labour will back an amendment which would force Mrs May to delay Brexit if she can not get her deal through Parliament. May lost support from both the hard-Leave and hard-Remain factions of her own party, leading to the motion failing.

Asked if Butts is a sacrificial lamb, he said only Trudeau could answer that but given the timing with SNC-Lavalin so much in the news, Singh said it was further evidence that there was wrongdoing.

"I have served it to the best of my abilities, and I have at all times given the Prime Minister free and unfettered advice". Life is full of uncertainties, but I am absolutely certain of that.

"Canadians are rightly concerned about the allegations of political interference in a criminal prosecution". Liberals use their majority to call one closed-door meeting and hear from senior officials (Lametti as justice minister, the top bureaucrat in his department, and the clerk of the Privy Council) who can talk about the tension between the minister of justice's duties as a politician and his or her responsibilities as attorney general of Canada. It found that among the 43% of Canadians who are following the controversy, 73% believe Wilson-Raybould has the most credibility, compared to 27% for Trudeau.

"Gerald Butts served his government - and our country - with integrity, sage advice and devotion. I want to thank him for his service and continued friendship", he said.

Butts penned parting words for Wilson-Raybould in his public resignation letter as well. From my perspective, our relationship has always been defined by mutual respect, candour and an honest desire to work together. Nobody knows that more than I do.

He says after Liberal justice committee members attempted last week to obstruct any attempt to get to the bottom of the allegations, while the prime minister repeatedly changed his story, it's become clear that a public inquiry is needed.
