Kiwi deportations 'corrosive', Jacinda Ardern tells Scott Morrison

With Britain recently announcing they will accept Hauwai rolling out 5G across the country, questions have been asked if New Zealand could change its mind.

The Courier Mail reports that senior New Zealand departmental officials told their Australian counterparts that this country is no longer open to resettling single asylum seeker men on Manus Island.

Her officials were not aware of any such directives being made by other departments.

"For us to be able to meet on that day is a sign of that friendship, and when it comes to these meetings it's always families first and we are family here in the Pacific, but particularly between Australia and New Zealand".

It is election year in Australia and polls across the Tasman are indicating it could be a tight race, so Mr Morrison will be keen for the photo opportunity with Ms Ardern, but at the same time wanting to avoid any criticism that he is visiting wineries on Waiheke Island instead of working in Canberra.

Mr Morrison has forgone the normal overnight stay that former Australian Prime Ministers have opted for.

The "corrosive" issue of deporting New Zealanders from Australia looks to continue despite Australia being "family, in every sense of the word", Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said today after the annual Australia-New Zealand Leaders' Meeting.

Fabinho admits to Van Dijk challenge
I think we have four solid defenders and with the right match I think they can perform to the best of their capabilities. It's not easy, especially playing for Man United , big club, to not start that well and have criticism from the media.

Kiwis understood the need to deport criminals, Ms Ardern continued, but not those who had lived their lives in Australia.

Moving to another source of political tension between the countries, New Zealand's offer to take 150 refugees from Nauru since 2013 was once again rebuffed - with Mr Morrison saying the Australian Government had "no plans to take up that arrangement whatsoever" and that it was up to the USA who was accepted.

The Morrison government has attacked the new medevac regime, arguing there's a loophole that prevents people from being sent back to Manus Island and Nauru once they have been transferred to Australia for treatment.

Mr Shorten accused the government of focusing exclusively on the issue to distract Australians from other priorities.

She said New Zealand echoed the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees approach to prioritise resettlement of women and children and while the door was not shut to men, New Zealand would conduct their own rigorous assessment of cases.

Under the new regime, two doctors can recommend asylum seekers now on Manus Island or Nauru be transferred to Australian territory for treatment.
