The judge then set arraignment for March 27.

As Patterson left the courtroom, he told his father, "I love you", The Associated Press reported.

The room was packed Patterson's family and Jayme Closs's family.

It was the first time Patterson has appeared in person, though the hearing lasted all of three minutes.

It is not unusual for defendants to waive the preliminary examination, in part due to the fact that there is a relatively low burden for the state to establish probable cause to move the case forward.

Patterson was bound over for trial, meaning there's enough evidence in the case to proceed to trial.

Patterson once again smiled and nodded at family in the audience as he was ushered out of the courtroom.

According to the criminal complaint, Patterson shot and killed Jayme's parents in October as they tried to protect her.

Jackman was skeptical that their truce was a real thing though and you can see that hesitation in his commercial. Reynolds, foolishly, assumes Jackman had been working just as hard on his add for Reynolds' Aviation Gin .

Jayme was held captive for 88 days before she managed to escape last month, donning a pair of her captor's shoes and dashing out into the snow.

Patterson, 21, faces up to life in prison on charges that he killed James and Denise Closs and kidnapped their 13-year-old daughter Jayme and held her captive for almost three months.

Jayme escaped on January 10, 2019, while Patterson was out of the residence and made contact with neighbors who called law enforcement. Patterson was arrested shortly after when he returned to the area in his vehicle. The elder Patterson responded, "I love you".

According to the criminal charges, Patterson told investigators he saw Jayme getting on a school bus near her home and chose to abduct her. He said he had no idea who she was, but "he knew that was the girl he was going to take".

Patterson had no connection to the Closs family. He's also charged with one count of armed robbery.

Patterson is being held on $5 million bail.

The teen is understood to be spending time with family and friends and in therapy to help her get over the horrors of being forced to live in a squalid basement "cell" strewn with soft toys, filthy bedding and women's clothes. Since her reunion, family members have posted updates online on how she's doing. We had to share! The photo, shared to a Facebook group, showed Jayme tucking into a hearty meal alongside her grandfather at his home in Wisconsin - after he promised to buy the teenager "a big steak" when she was found.
