Martin Guptill runs flow sweeps New Zealand past Bangladesh

Nobody has cashed in more from this series than Martin Guptill, with the opener bringing up his second straight century with a brutal innings.

Opener Martin Guptill made it back-to-back centuries in front of 4571 at Christchurch's Hagley Oval on Saturday as New Zealand belted Bangladesh by eight wickets to clinch the ODI series 2-0 with a match to play in Dunedin on Wednesday. Astle castled him in the next over for 57 - back-to-back half-centuries - ensuring Bangladesh's lower order had to get involved for the last 14 overs.

After carrying his bat for 117 in the first match which New Zealand won by eight wickets, Guptill made 118 as New Zealand at 229/2 surpassed Bangladesh's total of 226 with nearly 14 overs remaining.

With the World Cup looming, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was pleased to see his side had taken lessons from the 4-1 drubbing inflicted by India.

"Another clinical performance for us is what we're wanting", Williamson said.

"Today and in the last game there were a couple of nice performances obviously led by Martin Guptill".

After rolling Bangladesh for 226, Guptill made a flying start in New Zealand's reply as they passed through 10 overs at 59 for one while Bangladesh were 32 for two at the same stage.

He managed four sixes in total, and 14 fours, bringing up his 16th ODI century from just 76 balls as he added 143 for the second wicket with Kane Williamson, who broke a relative drought by finishing unbeaten on 65 as the Black Caps completed their chase with 13 overs remaining.

Mithun went on to make New Zealand pay, combining for a 75-run sixth wicket stand with Sabbir Rahman.

Nicholls fell with the total 45 but when Guptill was out for 118 in the 29th over, New Zealand was 188-2 and coasting to victory.

Kane Williamson completed his 37th one-day worldwide half century and was 65 not out at the end, hitting a boundary for the winning runs, while Ross Taylor was 21 not out.

When Williamson won the toss and opted to bowl under cloudy skies, the Bangladesh top order again failed to fire.

Mithun again played the anchor role, as he did with his hard-fought 62 in the first match. New Zealand, however, assisted the Bangladesh revival with 23 extras and some sloppy fielding while Rahman had fortune on his side when an edge off a delivery from Astle nicked the stumps but the bails stayed on.

It was a freakish first over from de Grandhomme, who bowled three wides in his first four deliveries and sent down five wides in what proved a long opening over.

Taylor, usually such a safe pair of hands at first slip, shelled two sitters.

As they did in the first ODI three days ago, the New Zealand bowlers collected wickets regularly, beginning with Lockie Ferguson's removal of Liton Das for one with the first ball of the fourth over. But a single warm-up match sent them into the ODI series under-prepared and they have struggled to adapt to New Zealand conditions.
