El Chapo's sons charged with drug trafficking

Two sons of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman - both on the run in Mexico - have been charged with drug trafficking by U.S. authorities, the Department of Justice said Thursday.

"I gave instructions to facilitate everything so the sisters can go to the United States, and to help them in accordance with the law, and the rules of that country so they can visit him, or be in contact", he said.

Their father was convicted earlier this month on drug and conspiracy charges after a three-month trial in NY.

The president said on Twitter he had omitted to mention the visa request included Guzman's mother.

Prosecutors have said Guzman, who twice escaped from prison in Mexico and was extradited to the U.S. a year ago for his trial, had amassed a multibillion-dollar fortune smuggling tons of cocaine and other drugs in a vast supply chain that reached well north of the border.

His conviction on the top charge of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise carries a mandatory term of life in prison. He was extradited to the United States in January 2017.

The two brothers, who are both believed to be living in Mexico, allegedly conspired to distribute cocaine, meth and marijuana in the U.S. from April 2008 until April 2018, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said Thursday.

Guzman was found guilty on February 12 of running a continuing criminal enterprise as leader of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel, along with drug trafficking, weapons and money laundering conspiracy charges.

Lopez Obrador, who has sought to avoid conflict with Trump over his wall plan, is exploring the legalization of some drugs. During his election campaign he floated the idea of granting amnesty to perpetrators of less serious drug-related offenses.
