In yet another notable step towards electrification, Porsche has announced that one of its most popular vehicles - the Macan - is going full electric. The new Macan will be produced at Porsche's Leipzig site, the same location that the company will manufacturer the upcoming Taycan sports EV sedan.

As of now, the Macan is Porsche's best-selling model by a long shot. It'll also come with 800V tech.

Porsche intends to launch the Taycan later in 2019. That's the production version of the Mission E concept, which will be followed by the Taycan Cross Turismo. That will have a raised ride-height as well as more muscular styling, though also be all-electric.

"Green" will soon apply to more than just the Macan's paint. Porsche has said that it wants 50 percent of its new cars to have "an electric drive system" by 2025, and an electric Macan will be a big factor in achieving that. That could mean mild-hybrids, plug-in hybrids, or fully-electric, sitting alongside updated versions of internal-combustion engines. It's a new platform, so-far unseen in the market.

It will share its platform with its sibling luxury brand, Audi.

Specific details are slim as of now, Porsche only confirming the Macan will have 800-volt charging technology. Using a 350-kilowatt charge point, Porsche has hinted that 62 miles could be added in just 4 minutes and close to 250 miles in less than 20 minutes.

Last fall Porsche CFO Lutz Meschke said that it would be very likely that a fully electric SUV would arrive for "a large-volume model" by 2022. Thanks to the all-electric torque, real-time torque-vectoring and high performance of electric powertrains, the next-gen Porsche Macan should be a riot to drive. How enthusiasts, wooed by models like the Macan Turbo and Macan GTS, might feel remains to be seen. Production of the electric Macan "will begin early in the next decade" at a plant in Germany, Porsche said.
