Patient Tested for Ebola in Pennsylvania

An unidentified patient was being tested on Wednesday at a Philadelphia hospital for possibly having been exposed to the deadly Ebola virus, a hospital official said.

"A patient who met screening criteria for Ebola testing is now being evaluated at HUP while tests to assess the patient's condition are completed", Dr. Patrick J. Brennan, chief medical officer at Penn Medicine, told told NBC 10.

"Proper protocols and precautions will remain in place to ensure the safety of all of our patients and staff", Brennan said.

The hospital stressed that it was conducting the tests "in an abundance of caution" because the patient met the screening criteria for Ebola.

According to the ministry of health, there's now an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has resulted in over 300 people deaths.

It's unclear whether the patient had traveled to a place that is now experiencing an outbreak of the disease, like the Democratic Republic of Congo, or came into contact with someone who is infected.

There is a now an outbreak of Ebola in the African country of Congo. "This can occur when a person touches the infected body fluids (or objects that are contaminated with them), and the virus gets in through broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, or mouth. People can get the virus through sexual contact as well".
