Pentagon says 250 troops moved to Texas to confront caravan

Some Central American migrants seeking entry into the United States but stalled near a Texas crossing said on Wednesday they are considering moving to another part of the border, where they may have a better chance of lodging a speedy asylum claim.

Homeland Security says a caravan with about 2,000 migrants has arrived at the U.S.

"Where does this lead us?" said Sen.

Acting Department of Defense Secretary Patrick M. Shanahan authorized the movement of active duty military personnel from border security assignments in Arizona previously ordered by President Donald Trump, Captain Bill Speaks, USN, told Breitbart News on Wednesday. He said the orders from the DOD secretary come "in response to migrant caravan activity now approaching the Texas border". "This crisis won't be solved until we have comprehensive border security".

A larger than usual number of federal, state and local law enforcement officers patrolled Tuesday along the US border town of Eagle Pass, across from Pidras Negras, where 1,800 immigrants from Central America have arrived, seeking asylum.

Asylum seekers have traditionally been granted the right to stay in the United States while their cases were decided by a US immigration judge, but a backlog of more than 800,000 cases means the process can take years. They include military police, medical personnel and engineers. Several weeks later, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said that around 2,000 migrants had arrived in the town of Piedras Negras in northern Mexico, located near the Eagle Pass entry point at the USA border.

Officials with the Consulate of Guatemala in Del Rio said about 200 immigrants in the caravan are staying in a shelter in Piedras Negras.

More than 1,700 Central American migrants arrived in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, this week, Breitbart News reported.

A previous caravan that arrived at the Mexican town of Tijuana past year was comprised of around 5,600 migrants.
