President Trump: Democrats do nothing to secure border, national emergency still possible

But he remains at odds with the Democrats over funding to build a wall along the Mexican border.

But chants of "Dump Trump" on the school bus haven't deterred the boy from agreeing to attend the State of the Union as the guest of President Trump (no relation).

The Democrats have viewed Trump's border wall as expensive, ineffective and "immoral" and call the proposal "a political theater".

The president's comments come just hours before he is set to give his State of the Union address, in which he plans to emphasize unity.

"I am asking you to defend our very risky southern border out of love and devotion to our fellow citizens and to our country", he said, painting a dark and foreboding picture of the risks posed to Americans by illegal immigration. "Wealthy politicians and donors push for open borders while living their lives behind walls and gates and guards".

As he stands before lawmakers, the president will be surrounded by symbols of his political opposition.

And the makeup of the House chamber - with Democrats newly in the majority and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the chair behind him - also were very much on display. Some Democratic women will be wearing white, the colourfavoured by early 20th-century suffragettes.

In the audience will be several Democrats running to challenge Trump in 2020, including senators Kamala Harris of California, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY. Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

Back on the national stage after gaining a wide following during her close, but unsuccessful bid to become the first black woman governor in the nation, the Georgia Democrat took aim at Trump and the Republican leadership in Congress for not doing more to help the nation's poor and disadvantaged. Prior to the advent of television and radio, past presidents submitted a written address, rather than giving a speech before Congress. His speech sought to shore up Republican support that had eroded slightly during the recent government shutdown and previewed a fresh defense against Democrats as they ready a round of investigations into every aspect of his administration.

An 11-year-old boy who has been bullied because of his last name - Trump - will be one of the special guests at this year's State of the Union speech in the United States. Polls show he has work to do, with his approval rating falling to just 34 percent after the shutdown, according to a recent survey conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

While claiming that there is "a massive humanitarian crisis" at the U.S. -Mexico border, Trump has insisted that a wall or "a steel barrier" is essential to border security and keeping out "criminals, gangs, human traffickers and drugs".

The speech on Tuesday night (7.30 am IST on Wednesday) will be Trump's third to a Joint Session of Congress.

Contrary to his aggressive tweets and his frequent lashing out against the opposition Democratic leadership, Trump intends to portray a picture of national unity in resolving the challenges being faced by the country, officials familiar with preparations for the State of the Union Address said on Monday.

In December, Trump took revenge on Congress by triggering a crippling five-week partial shutdown of government.

Trump is expected to address his concerns about border security and immigration, arguing how a U.S. -Mexico border wall, a plank of his 2016 presidential campaign, could fix those problems, amid speculation that he would declare a national emergency over illegal immigration.

Joshua Trump has been invited to the State of the Union.
