Prince George's unemployment rate down year-over-year

The Canadian economy added nearly 67,000 net new jobs in January with strong gains in the private sector

Jobless rates in the region rose nearly a full percentage point in one month.

The latest labour force statistics have been released.

The national unemployment rate was 5.8 per cent in January, up from the 43-year low of 5.6 per cent in December.

That increase - 16,000 workers - was driven by younger people, Statistics Canada said.

The change was much more drastic in the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region. The unemployment rate continued to hover at about 5.5 per cent. Year-over-year, Saskatchewan gained 7,700 jobs.

Total hours worked are up 1.2 per cent over the same period, according to StatsCan, compared to 0.9 per cent in December. However, those numbers are not as high as a year ago. In January, the labour force contracted to 104,200 from 105,300, the number of people employed fell to 96,100 from 98,200 and the participation rate went from 66 to 65.6 per cent.

Andersen made 25 saves in the December win over the Rangers and has won his last three starts against them. Ennis suffered a broken ankle in a game against the New York Rangers on December 22.

The statistics show that Camrose-Drumheller has the highest unemployment rate of all the economic regions in the province. The details were relatively solid too, with the all of the jobs coming in paid employment and a slight tick up in wage growth despite Ontario's minimum wage increase falling out of the annual calculation.

The province saw job losses in fishing, mining, quarrying, oil and gas, down 4,800 jobs, and in manufacturing, down 3,500 jobs.

Sherry Cooper, chief economist for Dominion Lending Centres, wrote in a research note to clients Friday called the increase in the number of people looking for work a sign of strength, even though it has nudged up the unemployment rate. This was followed up by Nova Scotia at 9.9% and New Brunswick at 8.2%.

The bumper jobs data, the second month of outsized gains in the last three, is one of the last major indicators ahead of the Bank of Canada's next rate decision on March 6. The number of self-employed positions, which can include unpaid work, declined by 60,700.

Canada adds 67K new jobs in January, but unemployment rate rises to 5.8% . In Alberta, the rates were 6.7% (men) and 5.3% (women). "So while today's data will be bullish for the Canadian dollar and bearish for fixed income, the Bank of Canada is still likely on the sidelines for the first half of 2019".
