Steve Stricker is expected to be announced as US Ryder Cup captain

PGA golfer Steve Stricker walks off the green after finishing on the 18th hole during the second round of the Sony Open in Hawaii golf tournament at Waialae Country Club.

An emotional Stricker was close to tears as he told a press conference what it means to him to be handed the task of regaining the Ryder Cup.

Stricker, 51, becomes the first US Ryder Cup captain never to have won a major championship.

Stricker will also assist Tiger Woods in this year's edition in Melbourne, although may take on a more significant role if, as expected, Woods qualifies for the team as a player.

Steve Stricker, who oversaw one of the most lopsided U.S. victories in Presidents Cup history two years ago outside of NY, is hoping to reprise that success after the PGA of America officially introduced him as captain of the 2020 U.S. Ryder Cup team on Wednesday in Milwaukee.

"Truly a dream come true, an honour to represent the PGA, the competition itself, truly humbled by this opportunity because I'm very passionate about this competition", Stricker said. "I want to help any way I can". The U.S was routed in Paris in September by the score of 17½ to 10½.

The amiable Stricker, one of the game's most respected figures, was a member of the 11-person U.S. Ryder Cup Task Force convened by PGA of America president Ted Bishop in the wake of the 2014 loss under Tom Watson. A 12-time victor on the PGA Tour, Stricker will be an assistant captain under Woods at the Presidents Cup in December in Australia.

The Aero India official website said a total of 61 aircraft would be on display and 403 exhibitors would be part of the show. Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat, Air Force Chief B S Dhanoa and Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba were also present.

Stricker said he was confident the U.S. team could bounce back from their thrashing in France past year. "I think what we're seeing here is that anything is possible now".

Woods, speaking in Mexico City where he was preparing for the start on Thursday of the WGC-Mexico Championship, said Stricker's ability to communicate with players was just one of his many qualifications for the job.

As a player, Stricker went 3-7-1 in three Ryder Cup appearances in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

"You know when you're going up against a guy like that, that he's mentally tough and strong".

"He's very good at communicating with the guys, getting their opinions but putting his foot down when he has to".

Stricker will be the first U.S. captain not to have won a major championship, but that requirement appears to have been discarded after the formation of a "task force" to examine the United States's poor recent record in the wake of the defeat at Gleneagles in 2014.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington was named European captain last month.
