Safe Internet Week: Google Offers Up Official Password Checkup Extension

This week Google released new measures in a bid to provide better security for its users' data.

It's two latest updates created to keep data secure are Password Checkup, and Cross Account Protection.

There are plenty of third-party tools out there to check specific data breach events if you're concerned a specific site has leaked access to your information but keeping track of all the compromised accounts is a daunting task that is near impossible.

This presents a choice - log into the website, change the password to something unique, after which Password Checkup will stop issuing warnings for that site, or unwisely ignore the warning by clicking "close".

Google stated that it uses a technique called as Blinding to scan and match the password with Google's Database of usernames and passwords without having the need to view them.

We only share information with apps where you have logged in with Google.

Rangers striker Morelos to serve three-game ban after losing appeal
After reviewing television footage, the Rangers goalkeeper has been charged and could face a two-game ban should he be found guilty at a hearing on Tuesday.

However, according to Emily Schechter, product manager of Chrome security at Google, "Two in three people ... reuse the same password for multiple accounts".

By strengthening their online defenses, internet users can be sure that their online information is secure, Google said. In a security blog post, the company explains how Password Checkup works, asserting that it was "designed jointly with cryptography experts at Stanford University to ensure that Google never learns your username or password".

"This is our first version of the Password Checkup, and we'll be refining in the coming months". If you're in the clear, the extension will tell you that none of your recently used passwords were detected in a data breach. Sixty-nine percent of respondents rated themselves highly for how they protect their accounts. However, these protection methods haven't extended to the apps that users sign into with Google Sign in. Google's Family Link allows users to manage their children's account settings and block certain apps and websites.

We only share basic information about the event, like whether your account was hijacked, or if we forced you to log back in because of suspicious activity.

Let us know what you think of these tools.

Of course, there are already a number of freely available services on the internet similar to Google's Password Checkup like Have I Been Pawned, the Identity Leak Checker and Firefox Monitor, that offer to check if your credentials or other personal details have been compromised in one of the numerous breaches that occur every year.
