Saudi Arabia replaces ambassador to United States with first female envoy



Saudi Arabia has announced that Princess Reema bint Bandar al-Saud will become its next ambassador to the U.S. - the first woman ever to take on an envoy role for the kingdom.

The appointment of Princess Reema appeared to be aimed at turning a new page after the killing of Mr Khashoggi, who lived in Virginia and was a columnist for The Washington Post, while also emphasising the kingdom's social reforms in the capital of its most important ally.

Bint Bandar, who was born in 1975, holds a BA degree in Museum Studies with an academic focus on the preservation of historical monuments, from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Recently, the World Economic Forum appointed her to its Young Global Leaders program.

I have had constructive discussions with King Salman of Saudi Arabia, the Amir of Kuwait, Prime Minister Hariri of Lebanon and others, on issues such as migration, the crises in Yemen and Syria, instability in Libya, the evolving threat from Daesh, and the Middle East Peace Process.

USA lawmakers have threatened to take tougher action against Saudi Arabia over the brutal killing amid claims that the crown prince was personally responsible.

Deputy Minister of Defense Prince Khalid Bin Salman, in his first mission as Deputy Minister of Defense, conveyed the greetings of the Saudi leadership to the men of the armed forces stationed at the southern border, Saudi Press Agency said.

She is also a founding member of the Zahra Breast Cancer Awareness Association.

Princess Reema's appointment is a public relations move, to be sure.

Earlier this month, a panel of British MPs and lawyers investigating the detention of women's rights activists in Saudi Arabia has concluded that their treatment may constitute torture under Saudi and worldwide law.

In a speech to Tory activists the PM said, as her negotiations with the European Union reach their final stages, the "worst thing we could do is lose our focus".
