The US Senate on Thursday confirmed William Barr as the country's next attorney general, putting the veteran Republican lawyer in charge of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of any ties between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

During his previous confirmation, Barr told the Senate Judiciary Committee that, however broad a constitutional right to privacy may be, "I do not believe it extends to abortion".

That view has alarmed Democrats, especially since the obstruction inquiry has been central to Mueller's investigation.

This will be Barr's second tour as attorney general; he led the Justice Department during the George H.W. Bush administration. He was a proponent of mass incarceration and similar tough-on-crime policies. Before that, he was a partner at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he was also co-head of the firm's Washington, D.C. office. He has also held posts at Verizon Communications, the Central Intelligence Agency and in former President Ronald Reagan's White House.

The vote was 54-45, primarily on a party-line basis with most Republicans backing the 68-year-old and most Democrats opposed.

Republican Rand Paul of Kentucky voted against Mr Trump's pick, while North Carolina Republican Richard Burr did not vote.

"Barr has also begun discussions on a successor to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has overseen the Mueller probe for most of its existence", CNN reported. It was reported that he was planning on timing the move for after Barr's confirmation to ensure a smooth transition, so it could come at any time.

Barr's claim of independence did little to assuage Senate Democrats skeptical of his potential handling of the looming conclusion of Mueller's investigation.

Before being nominated, Barr wrote a 19-page legal memo, in which he called part of Mueller's probe into whether the president obstructed justice "fatally flawed". Barr is to replace Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, whose next role is as yet unclear, and Barr also is expected to bring on a new deputy attorney general.

Senate Republicans meanwhile have praised Mr Barr's political resume.
