Silver doesn't like trade demands despite 'enormous media interest'

Adam Silver uses Patriots NFL to make point about NBA's competitive balance

Adam Silver was asked during his All-Star Game media availability about the issues of tampering and trade requests.

Both topics have been a topic of conversation of late due to the trade request of Anthony Davis.

Past issues of small-market teams having less to spend than teams from larger cities have given way to clubs being more willing to pour money into being contenders no matter the size of the area, Silver noting poor runs by New York, Los Angeles and Chicago teams in recent years. As you know this is the sixth time we've changed the lottery and I'm pretty sure we acknowledged at the time and people familiar with the operation of other leagues, you understand why there's relegation in European soccer, for example. So within reason, I think we're doing a good job enforcing our rules.

"In terms of trade demands, again, certainly, that's nothing new in this league, and I won't name names, but some of the greatest players in the history of this league have demanded trades at various points in their contract".

In addition, Silver also feels the trend of players demanding trades publicly with multiple years left on their contracts makes for publicity but "not the publicity the National Basketball Association is looking for". "Clearly, in many cases the odds are not in their favor". "There's very little I'm ever going to do to stop that completely".

Saying the goal is to provide a fair situation for all 30 clubs, he added, "Over time we will do a better job there".

Colin Kaepernick To Patriots? Exiled QB’s Lawyer Predicts Shocking Move
Kaepernick played with the 49ers from 2013 to 2017, when he severed his contract with the team to become a free agent. Reid signed a three-year deal with the Panthers, CBS reports, earlier this week, for an estimated $22 million.

"I think the jury is still out even for teams that have spent years in a rebuilding mode and that strategy comes at a huge price to those organizations, " Silver said on a Bleacher Report podcast.

"If you look at the success of the so-called big markets in the last five years, they've been at an all-time low in terms of their success on the floor", Silver said.

"But I would just say, blanketly, no, I don't like trade demands, and I wish they didn't come, and I wish all those matters were handled behind closed doors". "There's a mindset that, if you're going to be bad, you might as well be really bad".

"It hasn't worked out as we had planned", Silver said.

"That player movement can be positive for a lot of teams", Silver said. "It's an area when we can do better".
