Head coach Bob Huggins of the West Virginia Mountaineers reacts as they take on the Marshall Thundering Herd in the first half during the second round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Viejas Arena on March 18, 2018 in San Diego, California.

This evening, the university released a statement that senior Esa Ahmad and junior Wesley Harris have been dismissed from the basketball team.

The Mountaineers announced the dismissals Monday night without elaboration. The 6-foot-8 forward was benched for two games - November 24 against Valparaiso and January 12 against Oklahoma State - but was regarded as the team's top perimeter defender.

Rafa Benitez hits out after Newcastle United are held at Molineux
Newcastle will be looking for a huge three points in their battle against relegation when they travel to Molineux on Monday night.

Ahmad is a senior whose collegiate eligibility is due to expire at the end of this season, but Harris was a fourth-year junior who will have a year of college eligibility remaining in the 2019-20 season. This season he had started 17 of WVU's 24 games and was averaging 7.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Ahmad was the team's third-leading scorer this season at 12 points per game and the third-leading rebounder at 5.8.

The forwards were leading West Virginia in playing time this season, with Ahmad averaging 28 minutes per game and Harris 25. If convicted, Harris faces up to a year in jail and a fine up to $500.

West Virginia's already endured a brutal season with an injury to star shot-blocker Sagaba Konate looming over a 10-14 campaign.
