Eisenstaedt wasn't able to take down the names of his subjects, so after the photo became a defining image of that day, several people have come forward claiming to be the subjects.

Although the image of George Mendonsa kissing Greta Zimmer Friedman has always been heralded for epitomising the joy shared throughout the world upon the ending of hostilities in 1945, it has come under scrutiny more recently, with many accusing Mendonsa of assault.

But Mendonsa and Friedman, who died in 2016 at the age of 92, were strangers to each other when he grabbed and kissed her.

"Sarasota police discovered the red-paint vandalism, which left "#MeToo" scrawled along the nurse's leg, early Tuesday morning. Authorities said there were no witnesses and no surveillance cameras near the statue to capture the incident.

George Mendonsa, the jubilant sailor shown kissing white-clad dental assistant Greta Zimmer Friedman at the "Crossroads of the World" on August 14, 1945, died Monday at the age of 95. The paint covered the length of the nurse's leg. According to the Palm Beach Post, the statue is one of the most-photographed roadside attractions in the state, drawing in couples who smooch and pose in front of it.

"Police in Florida said they were called to the 'Unconditional Surrender" sculpture just before 1am Tuesday (local time) after a report someone had spray painted the hashtag about sexual harassment and assault onto the nurse's leg. "During the canvass, no other objects were observed to be defaced or spray-painted". Police believe the vandalism took place Monday between the afternoon and evening.

"I saw what those nurses did that day when we had the wounded on my ship and we put the wounded on the hospital ship". "I had a few drinks, and it was just plain instinct, I guess".

"Suddenly I was grabbed by a sailor, and it wasn't that much of a kiss, it was more of a jubilant act", Friedman explained in an interview for the Veteran's History Project. "It wasn't a romantic event".

Many have said the photo is controversial and depicts a public display of sexual assault, Time previously reported.
