ATP Marseille Stefanos Tsitsipas tops David Goffin to set Kukushkin clash

Greek top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas has clinched his first singles title of the year with a 7-5 7-6 (7-5) victory over Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin at the Marseille Open. The 20-year-old Tsitsipas, who owns an 11-4 record this season, continues to impress after becoming the youngest Grand Slam semi-finalist since Novak Djokovic (2007 US Open) at the Australian Open last month.

The #NextGenATP Greek fired 14 aces and won 84 per cent of first-serve points (41/49) to lift the trophy after one hour and 58 minutes. "It's the biggest satisfaction and the biggest joy in tennis", Tsitsipas said afterwards.

"There was a lot of stress this week because I knew I had to face some good opponents".

A left-hander sprayed a forehand error in game five of the second set to fall further behind before he broke back in game eight after a forehand victor, in what was the only solid return game he played today. "This week, I can say I am really happy because I felt this hunger back again".

On Sunday, Tsitsipas edged a tight opening set with the first break of the match in game 12, before falling a break behind midway through the second set.

Canadian teenager through to Rio Open final
The previous youngest was now world number three Alexander Zverev , who reached the final of the Halle tournament in 2016 aged 19. Auger-Aliassime saved 5-of-7 break points and won 74 per cent of his first serve points.

Tsitsipas was seeing the ball very well on Kukushkin's serve and returns, hitting some juicy forehand and backhand winners straight down the line.

But Kazakh Kukushkin failed to serve for the set when leading 5-4, and Tsistipas pounced to seal victory on his first match point in the tie-break.

Changing strategies in the second set, Tsitsipas attempted a serve-and-volley game and came up to the net often in a bid to upset Kukushkin's rhythm.

Ugo competed in his first ATP semi-final after wins over Borna Coric and Matthias Bachinger although he stood no chance today despite those eight games he won, facing 12 break points and suffering three breaks to kept running away from the positive result nearly all the time.
