039;All My Children' star Susan Lucci 'Lucky to be alive' after major heart artery blockage

The All My Children star opened up about her health scare in the new issue of People Magazine.

"I suddenly felt what I heard from someone in a TV interview years ago, a woman say that she - leading up to a heart attack - felt like an elephant was pressing on her chest", she shared.

However, a few days later, it came back and was like pain "radiating around my rib cage". Lucci said she had felt discomfort in her chest twice before, but when she felt it a third time while she was shopping at a boutique, the store manager drove her to the hospital.

However, the 72-year-old's life took a sharp turn after she felt that pain again, discovering that she had severe heart problems, in which one artery was already 90 per cent blocked and the other was 75 per cent blocked.

"Ninety percent blockage - I was shocked", the star added.

"I'm not a nurse or anyone who can help in any real way", Lucci said.

Her personal cardiologist, Dr. Holly Anderson, explained, "Had she gone home, that 90 percent blockage could have become 100 percent and she could have suffered a significant heart attack or even sudden death".

'I told myself, it's nothing, it will go away, ' she admitted.

The news comes as especially shocking because Lucci is renown for her healthy lifestyle.

Not surprisingly, Lucci said the incident has had a lasting effect on her. "Every EKG I had was great".

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease kills one out of three women, resulting in 400,000 deaths each year. The surgery was a success, with Shlofmitz noting, "She has no damage". "We often put ourselves on the back burner". 'But if your body is telling you something, we need to pay attention'. Now, she's shining a light on the importance of heart health following a real-life health scare.
