Switch VR announcement could be coming this year - rumor

They also claim a small number of their first-party titles could receive VR support in the near future.

Nintendo could be bring VR to its console Switch this year. During that same year, it was also revealed that Nintendo had filed a patent application for a head-mounted display that could house Switch's tablet screen. Back in 2017 then president Tatsumi Kimishima said the tech would be added to Switch once it figures out how to allow users to "play for hours on end without problems".

This all follows the fact that (per Anime News Network) Nintendo recently entered a joint enterprise named "VRM Consortium". This is a group of 13 Japanese companies aiming "to develop the global virtual reality business with a focus on 3D avatars". Finally, there's the fact that Nintendo General Manager Shinya Takahashi told the BBC a year ago that Nintendo was preparing to announce new hardware.

NZ cries foul over Huawei rugby quip
Some reports suggested the "very unusual" incident was the result of a mention of the contested nation of Taiwan in paperwork onboard the plane.

All of this wasn't even Nintendo's first brush with VR. While Labo is certainly a smart choice for it, I'm more interested in what first-party titles could possibly see VR support. Unfortunately, that description didn't quite match (virtual) reality. But not only was the system too large and bulky, but the display was really bad, limited to a monochrome of red-and-black. So Nintendo had to put a lot of warning messages in the console.

But its been over 20 years now, and technology has come a long way. In the third quarter of 2018, it was reported that VR was growing at a year-over-year rate of 8.2%. IDC believes spending on VR and AR products and services will increase by 69% this year. SuperData are also anticipating growth of mobile augmented reality over the next few years due to Google and Apple. It's arguably better value than other Switch bundles that include a specific game because you can instead choose your own game, or buy multiple cheaper indie games with the credit.
