Ten dead in fire at football club ground in Brazil

A fire at Rio de Janeiro's state-of the-art training center for Flamengo soccer club has killed ten people and left many more injured, according to responding firefighters.

"The kids from the Flamengo youth team were sleeping there at the time", a firefighter told Brazilian news network GloboNews. The fire official said that could not be confirmed. Local media reported that the fire happened in a dorm where young players sleep. The cause is not yet known.

Aerial images from Globo TV showed smoke emerging from a charred building.

Australia's Commonwealth Bank first-half profit up 1.7 pct
Australia's largest financial firm Commonwealth Bank on Wednesday said profits fell six percent in the last six months of 2018 amid a "challenging environment" for the business.

Flamengo posted that the club "is in mourning".

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, who joined the club from Flamengo a year ago, said: "Just remembering the nights and days I spent at the training center, it gives me goosebumps". Let's pray for everyone.

He added: "Just to remember the nights and days that I spent [at the centre], is to shiver". Still not believing, but in prayer for all! "May God bless each one's family!" "May the Black and red nation have the strength and faith to overcome this moment".
