"In the face of imminent danger, a preemptive strike became absolutely necessary", India's foreign secretary, Vijay Gokhale, told reporters in Delhi. Earlier this month, Khan had authorized the army to "respond decisively and comprehensively to any aggression or misadventure" by India, after New Delhi vowed a "jaw-breaking response" to the Kashmir suicide bombing.

India accuses Pakistan of sheltering and supporting groups like Jaish-e-Muhammad.

Firing across the Line of Control has killed and wounded dozens of soldiers and civilians on both sides in recent years.

Pakistan's military confirmed Indian aircraft violated its airspace but said "no infrastructure got hit".

But the Pakistani military said no damage was caused when the aircraft dropped their payloads after flying three to four miles inside Pakistani territory. He underlined that "no casualties or damage" resulted from the attack.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has already authorised the military to take on India, convened a meeting for Wednesday of the National Command Authority, which oversees command and control of the country's nuclear arsenal. Facing timely and effective response from Pakistan Air Force released payload in haste while escaping which fell near Balakot.

Military planes could be heard over Srinagar, the capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, throughout Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Indians took to the streets in celebration across the country on Tuesday (Feb 26) after the government said it carried out air strikes inside Pakistan, killing hundreds of militants in a training camp.

The attack was claimed by Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), prompting India to accuse Pakistan of harbouring the militant group.

Jaish-e-Mohammad earlier claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on 14 February that killed 45 Indian paramilitary police in Pulwama of Kashmir.

Kashmir has been a flashpoint in India-Pakistan relations since partition.

Analysts have alleged Pakistani militants have their training camps in the area, although Pakistan has always denied the presence of any such camps.

TRT World spoke to Islamabad-based Kamran Yousaf about possible reaction from Pakistan.

Qureshi warned India not to challenge Pakistan and said "better sense should prevail in India", according to a statement cited by state-run Radio Pakistan. India has demanded that Jaish-e-Mohammad's leader, Azhar Masood, be listed as a terrorist by the United Nations, but that has been stymied by China. Pakistan at the time claimed no Indian incursion had occurred.

"They will work hard to ensure the victory of Narendra Modi", he said.

The purported attack was India's first use of air strikes against Pakistan since 1971, when the two went to war over Bangladesh's independence. They urged people to exercise restraint and said that there should be no attacks on Kashmiri students, a source said.
