It's leading the slowest Presidents Day weekend at the box office in nearly 20 years and has a ways to go to make up its costly budget.

Alita certainly didn't set any new President's Day weekend records, but it did benefit from its new release date that saw most kids out of school over the holiday.

The Box Office Mojo website is listing Alita: Battle Angel - James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez's live-action film of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) manga - with an estimated opening weekend earning of US$27.8 million, and a current four-day estimated domestic total of US$36,516,232, with a five-day gross of US$41.7 million.

It came in slightly ahead of expectations heading into the weekend, but Alita: Battle Angel still has an uphill battle to become profitable. However, the film does not look like a runaway hit.

Rounding out the weekend's top 10 were: Cold Pursuit (US$6 million for three days; US$7.1 million for four), The Upside (US$5.6 million; US$6.7 million), Glass (US$3.9 million; US$4.8 million), The Prodigy (US$3.2 million; US$3.8 million), Green Book (US$2.8 million; US$3.5 million). The film has yet to hit several foreign markets. It launches in China and Japan next weekend.

WB's The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part dipped -37.8% over the three-day and delivered an estimated $21.2 million, pushing the film's domestic cume to $62.7 million.

Alita, the cyberpunk CGI spectacle, earned $27 million when it debuted in 3,790 locations and $33 million over the four-day frame for a domestic haul of $41 million. Internationally it added over $12 million this weekend from 69 markets for a global cume that is now just shy of $98 million with releases in France and Italy this coming week followed by a March 21 release in Australia.

Other buzzy new release meta rom-com Isn't it Romantic took third place with an estimated $16 million across 3,444 theaters for the long weekend.

Rebel Wilson's romantic comedy, Isn't It Romantic earned the number three slot with just over $14 million. Compared to Alita, however, it only cost a meager $9 million to make, so it's sweet, sweet profit from here on out, baby. The film received a "B" CinemaScore and played to a crowd of which 80% were aged 25 and up.

In its second weekend at theaters, Paramount's comedy, What Men Want, pulled in at number four and earned an additional $10.9 million bringing the Taraji P. Henson vehicle to over $36 million for its USA release, easily earning back its $20 million price tag. The movie saw the best opening in Russian Federation, where it earned $6.5 million. In 2014, the first film had already broken the $100 million barrier with almost $50 million domestically in its second weekend at the box office. The Second Part now stands at $64 million at the global box office, more than $45 million of that total coming from North America.

Fellow new release Happy Death Day 2U didn't fare as well from the holidays. The film will open in Italy and Russian Federation on February 28 followed by a July 12 release in Japan.
